Two Koreas- One Tense Situation
1. The Republic of Korea.
2. Lee Myung-Bak-- Lee Myung-bak; born 19 December 1941) is a South Korean politician and the President of South Korea. Prior to his presidency, he was the CEO of Hyundai Engineering and Construction and the mayor of Seoul. He is married to Kim Yoon-ok and has three daughters and one son. His older brother is Lee Sang-deuk, a South Korean politician.
3. South Korea came into being after World War II, the result of a 1945 agreement reached by the Allies at the Potsdam Conference, making the 38th parallel the boundary between a northern zone of the Korean peninsula to be occupied by the USSR and southern zone to be controlled by U.S. forces.

Laura and her friend Euna Lee were detained when they crossed into North Korea from The People's Republic of China without a visa card. Bill Clinton flew over their to talk to Kim Jong-il in order to get Ling and Lee back.

5. The Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan. South Korea shares its only border with North Korea.

At the end of World War II, the governments of the United States and the Soviet Union decided that the Soviet Union would invade the Japanese held territories of mainland Asia south to the 38th Parallel and the United States would invade north to the same point. In 1948,with a failure to unite the two areas, elections were held and the new South Korea came under the power of Syngman Rhee. Kim Il-sung took power in North Korea.
On June 25 June, 1950, communist North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel into democratic South Korea. The 38th parallel, as the pre-war boundary between the countries, became the focal point for negotiations of a cease fire.
There has been no peace treaty, only a cease fire. The 38th parallel continues to be the most highly defended border in the world across the 3 mile wide Demilitarized Zone
7. North Korea is in poor shape comparatively speaking. It is existing in a mode similar to that which caused the second world war.
South Korea is a peaceful country that is on its way to being a world leader in production, technology and trade.
8. Living life in South Korea is not easy if you aren't included in the 'high class' with
money and power but people are working hard so that the economy and the democracy to be well
established. The so called 'Conservative Party' or 'Han Na Ra Dang' are mostly rich and powerful
people are grabbing for more money and even trying to control the media.
9. The United Nations had a meeting in December 2010 to try to "cool the tension" on the Korean Peninsula. They were concerned and they are talking about how North Korea needs to destroy all of their nuclear weapons.

11. South Korea has a "joint" military with the U.S. Based on the leadership roles in each country, South Korea's military is less powerful because they are not ruled by a dictatorship.

13. USA and Australia. Australia have been there for South Korea since the Korean War. Australia will helf the USA defend South Korea at all costs. Kevin Rudd will make sure he sends troops when North Korea invade or fire a missle at Seoul. The USA are also a major ally of South Korea
